With Halloween creeping up on most of us, possibly you are commencing to wonder about a cool costume for the all essential merrymaking. You don’t want to look like everybody else, so suss out these wonderful costume options for Halloween 2011. These are the latest costumes to hit the costume store shelves so that you can be confident you won’t be togged up in what everyone else has on. Having said this, all the options beneath adhere to a consistent theme, the Car hop outfit or rather the serving type costume. So let’s step into it.

A bit of detail on the Car hop costume theme

Carhop plus the serving type outfits are pretty varied to be honest. When I say varied, it’s because they take in all forms of cultures and times.

As an illustration, the Car hop costume is really inspired by the women and fellas that used to step on the running boards of vehicles in the 1940′s and 50′s to take a food order. These were the days of the drive in diners when people used to eat in their car and had it delivered by a attractive looking waitress in a costume. A few even started sporting roller skates and wearing revealing outfits. To some level they were to become more of a reason to visit the diners than the meals that were served.

Other popular editions of this uniform are the renaissance and medieval serving wench costumes. They are a mixture of “Ye Olde Worlde” buxom wench look with a a small number of pirate like rudiments thrown in for good measure. The low cut, peasant top is a classical component of this look.

Another in style serving type look is the Oktoberfest costume. It is a good option to go for since it can be used twice in a month! You will find so many variants of this, from the quite real to the outrageously flirty and sexy.

The Oktoberfest outfit is based on the basic feminine dress from the alpine and southern German regions of Europe, known as the dirndl. This was really a peasant style dress that covered most of the body. It was made from common material and was quite heavy duty in order that it didn’t wear out or tear when the wearer was hard at work.

It evolved into a bit of a national icon for these regions and was custom-made to be worn by servers in bars, taverns, ale houses and beer gardens. It goes without saying, the look needed to be refined to be a little more titillating. Consequently the hemline went up and the neckline went down. When you take a look at a number of the more eye popping versions on hand, these lines almost meet in the middle these days!

As you may have guessed, these are largely womens costumes.

Retro Apron

If you are looking for a gift idea for someone special, perhaps that person would like a retro apron.  When we think of aprons, we often think of mothers and grandmothers in the kitchen, but men can often benefit from having an apron as well.

Aprons are a reflection of the past, and it warms the heart remembering a love-filled kitchen when all of the distractions that we have now did not interfere with a home-cooked meal.

Some children today do not even know what an apron is. Aprons were originally used for protecting the dresses that were commonly worn daily as so few dresses were owned. It was much easier to wash an apron than a dress as it used much less material.

Aprons were used for many things in the kitchen other than protecting your dress. Often it was used to take something hot out of the oven. When slaving over a hot stove, it was used to wipe the perspiration of your brow. When the stove needed more kindling, the apron served as a way to carry it to the kitchen.

Aprons also served as carrying eggs in from the chicken coop, carrying vegetables in from the garden, or even bringing in apples that had fallen from the trees in the fall.

Retro aprons are very hot items right now, and are a favorite gift for that special cook in your life, or makes an excellent bridal shower gift, or that special mother/daughter duo that loves to spend time together in the kitchen.

Retro Sunglasses

When it comes to sunglasses, is retro the way to go?  You are probably seeing a lot of different designs of shades these days, are they new?  Truthfully, there are really no new designs, just redesigns of a formerly popular style.  In the fashion world, retro designs are everywhere–and sunglasses are no exception.

One design that has poked its head back into the fashion world is well known all over.  Onassis glasses, or the Jackie-O design sunglasses were popularized by the former First Lady Kennedy.  After becoming Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, she flaunted this oversized style of sunglasses all over the globe.  The style was so closely associated with her, that it has shared her name since the late seventies.

After fading from the public eye, the Onassis glasses lay dormant for about thirty years.  However, poised for a comeback, these sunglasses have begun making waves on red carpets and runways all over.  The women credited for bringing back the infamous sunglasses are Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton.  Since then, Jackie-O’s have been seen on the faces of famous women and trendy-but-average Janes everywhere.

Another retro design of sunglasses that has made big waves recently is the cleverly named Aviators.  Originally designed in the 1930′s for military pilots, Aviators were hot on fashionable faces in the 1960′s and 1980′s.  True to their every-twenty-year trend, Aviators are back with avengance and have been favorites for men, and women, with style.  It is particularly true that this style of sunglasses has caught on with the younger “MTV Crowd” more than with adults.  Johnny Knoxville has adapted Aviators as his signature style.

Some styles of sunglasses have briefly shown themselves in fashion, only to never be heard from again.  This is not necessarily a bad thing.  There are those sunglasses the human race still feels a little silly about.  However, let’s not speak too soon.  These sunglasses could be waiting in the wings for their triumphant return.

OVER-oversized sunglasses are one fashion faux-pa most of us would rather not make.  The design is a retro tribute to the late Lady O when they are slightly oversized and conservative.  However, when the sunglasses appear to be attempting to take over your face, you may have crossed the line into ridiculous.  Save the supersized look for clowns and put this design back in the vault.

Another design that some hope will never return carries a soft spot in the hearts of many women.  The Wayfarer sunglasses were first made popular by Hollywood’s bad boy, James Dean.  After his death, these sunglasses were worn for a time, before slowly falling by the wayside to make room for the newer styles.

However, the Wayfarer was gone but not forgotten.  The sunglasses made a double comeback on the faces of James Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, better known in the eighties as the Blues Brothers.  The sunglasses with a clean black, square design were a perfect complement to their all black suits, hats and ties.

Wayfarer sunglasses made one more comeback in 1983 when a sock and underwear clad young man slid into the living room and into our hearts.  Before Tom Cruise was the controversial figure he is today, he was a hot high school graduate just trying to get into a good college.  The Wayfarers sunglasses haven’t been much on the fashion scene since then, but we’ve never forgotten.

It’s hard to tell what may come next in the world of fashion sunglasses.  If you really want to keep up with it, just check the fashion magazines in early spring and see what new old styles are unfolding.  You may have seen them all before, but these retro sunglasses are bound to have a new and exciting twist.

Drive back in time with this 50′s Car Hop Girl Costume!

She’s the hippest waitress at the hottest diner! Back to the days of drive-in’s not drive-thrus.

Cozy on up to a stool at The Diner! The greasy spoon is serving all of your favorites while the jukebox is blaring  as you rock around the clock. Car Hop Girl is taking orders for an order of hamburger and fries and serving it up hot in an inspired retro waitress dress.

A Saturday night trip to the drive-in movie with a date and a Sunday afternoon ride topped off with a burger and shake delivered to your car by someone on roller skates was what we called a great weekend in the 1950s. These memories always put a smile on your face.

The car hop restaurant also was a glorious memory. Car Hop Waitresses began in the 1940′s and were a part of the way of life and peaked about 10 years later. When you think of the 1950′s, Car Hop Waitresses and the drive-in restaurants are a part of that image. The roller skating servers were the “show biz” part of this phenomenon.
